One of the things I love about living in western Washington is the presence of mountains, with the Cascades to the east and the Olympics to the west. Growing up in coastal New Brunswick, which is relatively flat outside the river valleys, getting to see mountains when I visited my grandparents in Maine was a treat. Couple those fond memories with reading The Lord of the Rings as a child, where Middle-earth’s mountains constantly weave in and out of the story, and its no wonder I still find them a wonder and delight. I sometimes joke that my mood is elevation based, and the further up I am the happier I’ll be.
That being the case, if there are mountains visible when I’m out with the camera, they’ll usually find their way into that day’s shots. The main photo for today, of The Brothers on the Olympic Peninsula, came about in that fashion, as did a hazy distant Mount Baker at sunset. The panorama with Big Four happened because I decided last Sunday that I needed to be in the mountains, not just looking at them. And I’d brought the drone along, so Mount Pilchuck makes an appearance from the air.
