Sometimes you have to move around a bit to get the angles just right, while holding the camera above your head to compose the shot using the rear screen, but the payoff is worth it.  This web was almost invisible from any other angle, but from this angle it sprang into existence and practically glowed.

And then there’s backlighting. I’m a fiend for it, when the object lets some of the light through and especially when it is otherwise surrounded by dark. Inject that chiaroscuro directly into my veins.

Color photo. A serrated leaf, strongly backlit by the sun from out of frame. It is upright, brilliant green, and its pale yellow-green veins are clearly visible. Below it other leaves on the same branch catch some light. They are surrounded by dark shadows, with some splashes of green and white.
Color photo. A patch of tall yellow fuzzy grass, strongly lit by the out of frame sun, turning them a glowing golden hue. The background is shadowed for the most part, with patches of blue, yellow, and green.
Color photo. A cluster of leaves, probably a Japanese Maple, seen from below. They are glowing in shades of orange and green, lit from above by the out of frame sun. The bottom of the frame is the pale blue sky, with some soft white clouds in the lower left.
Black and white photo. A pathway of bricks, receding towards the top of the frame. The middle is three bricks wide, with gaps between in which water glistens. On either side of this is a long strip of darker concrete. Outward from that are smaller square bricks, and then out from them are larger square bricks. The shadow of a tree dapples the top of the frame.
