Once again the cycle of the year has brought us back to the solstice. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, the first day of winter, the day of longest night, and the ancient holiday of Yule.

Brighter days are ahead.

I took this photo a couple of weeks ago on an afternoon walk. The sun was out, a rarity this time of year, low in the sky, backlighting the thin edges of the dark leaves and making them glow. I took the shot knowing I’d use it today.

Happy Solstice. Happy Yule.

Addendum: Just as the sun was beginning to set, my housemate told me there was a brilliant rainbow. I quickly grabbed the drone and launched it from the back deck. The light returns indeed!

Color photo. A street, seen from above, winds up through a neighborhood from the bottom of the frame. Tall pines grow between the houses. The sky is full of dark clouds, but the foremost are lit by the sun from out of frame. A brilliant rainbow leads down from the clouds to the houses.
