Yesterday was a day of experiments.

Experiment one was testing out how I liked walking for an extended period with a 150-600mm mounted, and the camera slung on my SpiderPro holster. I got the two holster SpiderPro setup on the recommendation of my friend and fellow photographer Heather Larkin, primarily so I could run two cameras for event work. When I’m doing that, I’m using a 70-200mm f2.8 on one body, and a 24-70mm f2.8 on the other. Heather suggested quite a while ago that the long zoom would work fine on the holster too, so off I finally went to see.

Experiment two was where I went. I’ve been trying to explore more parks & nature areas on the Eastside, since moving to Kirkland last year, and yesterday I went to the Chinook Bend Natural Area for the first time. I walked its trails for about three hours and it was delightful. Mostly hardwood trees, being next to the river, as well as thistle, late season Queen Anne’s Lace, and plenty of flowers I couldn’t identify.

Also blackberries.

So. Many. Blackberries.

I was hoping to do some birding, and I did catch a Great Blue Heron. Please enjoy the shot I got of the handsome fellow.

I’m considering the experiment a success, too. It was definitely weighty, having that long lens + camera hanging on my hip, but not unbearable.
